How Stretch Hood Machines Work
Stretch hood machines are end-of-line packaging systems that replace traditional stretch wrapping and strapping. A film hood is stretched over the pallet in one downward motion, creating a tight 5-sided seal — faster, more efficient, and with superior load stability.

The Technology Upgrade
Stretch hood machines replace two separate processes — stretch wrapping and strapping — with a single, faster, and more protective solution.

Stretch Wrapping
- Sides only — no top coverage
- Requires separate strapping for stability
- Film on pallet feet — incompatible with AGVs
- Horizontal tension only — load can shift

Stretch Hood
- 5-sided protection — top + all 4 sides
- Replaces strapping — no extra step needed
- Film-free pallet feet — AGV compatible
- Captured vertical tension — load locked down

How the Stretch Hood Process Works
MSK's patented technology stretches the film individually for each pallet dimension — then locks in vertical tension that spiral wrap simply cannot replicate.
Film Preparation
The stretch hood film tube is cut to length and welded at the top to form a bag — the stretch hood.
Stretching
Stainless steel stretching corners expand the hood to match the pallet's exact dimensions using MSK's patented process.
Application
The stretched film hood is pulled down over the pallet load in one swift downward motion, covering all 5 sides.
Elastic Memory
The stretch hood film contracts around the load, creating a tight seal with permanent holding force — no strapping needed.
It's All About Vertical Tension
During application, the film is vertically pre-stretched — creating stored elastic energy. When released, it is either tucked underneath the pallet base (Understretch) or cinched up along the sides (Belt Stretch), locking in a powerful downward clamping force across the entire load.
Stretch wrap can only apply horizontal tension as it spirals around the pallet. Captured vertical tension is the fundamental reason stretch hood machines outperform stretch wrappers for load stability, top protection, and transport security. The downward clamping force also increases friction between layers of goods — preventing individual items from shifting or sliding, even during rough transport conditions.
Specialized Film Application Processes
Collar Stretch
Film placed like a belt on the top panel. Pallet feet remain film-free for automated pallet handling with AGVs and high-rack storage.
Understretch
Film pulled deep underneath the pallet, maximizing vertical tension force for ultimate load stability during transport.
Belt Stretch
An additional film belt reinforces the load at the bottom, providing extra security for heavy or unstable loads.
